Host Like a Local: Editorial Food Photography for South Australian Style Magazine & Norwood Place
Creating an editorial campaign celebrating local food, recipes and community.
Food has a way of bringing people together, and this editorial commission for South Australian Style Magazine was all about celebrating that.
Working alongside recipe creator Johana Boutros of Eat With Jo, I photographed a collection of approachable, flavour-filled recipes for Norwood Place, showcasing the incredible produce and specialty retailers found within the precinct.
Designed as a winter entertaining feature, the story encourages readers to shop locally while creating simple meals to share with family and friends.
Editorial food photography with a lifestyle approach
Rather than simply documenting the finished dishes, the goal was to create imagery that felt warm, generous and inviting.
Using soft natural light, thoughtful styling and a fresh colour palette, each scene was designed to feel like an effortless gathering around the table. From overhead recipe imagery to styled lifestyle moments with Jo, every photograph was created to complement the editorial layout while inspiring readers to recreate the recipes at home.
The feature included three seasonal dishes:
One Tray Barramundi with Vegetables & Tahini
Kafta and Batata Tray Bake
Mama's Tabouli with Chicken Shawarma
Each recipe highlighted ingredients sourced from Norwood Place retailers, reinforcing the connection between local businesses and home cooking.
Telling stories through food
Food photography is about far more than making a dish look beautiful.
It's about creating atmosphere, evoking flavour and capturing the feeling of gathering around a table. Editorial food photography combines styling, composition and light to tell a story that invites the viewer into the moment.
